LAGOS, Sept. 2 (Xinhua) — Nigeria’s army said on Thursday six members of a group have been killed in recent operations aimed at routing remnants of the group in the country’s northeast region.Army spokesperson Onyema Nwachukwu said in a statement on Thursday four members of the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP), an offshoot of Boko Haram, ran into a fighting patrol team of troops of the Operation HADIN KAI on Wednesday at Kukawa area of the Borno state.The four ISWAP militants who were “on espionage” along a road in the area were killed in the fire fight ensued with the troops, said Nwachukwu.

In a separate operation on the same day, said the amy spokesperson, another team of troops of the Operation HADIN KAI killed two ISWAP militants in an ambush operation at Musari village of the Borno state.Boko Haram has been trying to establish an Islamist state in northeastern Nigeria since 2009. The group has also extended its attacks to other countries in the Lake Chad Basin.
